How to hire the best lawyer for your Jones Act or other offshore injury case

First, ask the SEVEN CRITICAL QUESTIONS you should ask any lawyer before hiring them for any type of personal injury case.

Maritime injury cases are different than all other types of personal injury cases. Cases involving offshore accidents and injuries will be subject to maritime law and the Jones Act. You need an attorney knowledgeable in these areas of the law.

Ask the lawyer what kind of experience he or she has in handling offshore cases. Ask for a list of such cases he or she has handled, including the results achieved on those cases.

Ask the lawyer if he or she has handled other cases against the company or companies involved in your case. An experienced offshore accident lawyer will likely have handled numerous cases against the same companies. Obviously, there is a finite number of companies doing offshore work. If the lawyer you are interviewing has never handled a case against the companies involved in your maritime accident, you may want to interview some more lawyers.

There are two important reasons why you want to hire a lawyer who has litigated against the same companies before. First, the lawyer will have experience in dealing with this same company and its lawyers, which should help your lawyer work more effectively and efficiently. Maritime accidents happen on all sorts of different rigs, platforms and vessels. Ask the lawyer you are interviewing about his or her experience in handling cases involving an accident location similar to your accident location. Has the lawyer ever handled a case involving a jack up rig? A work boat? A platform? The list goes on and on.

Once you are comfortable that the lawyer you are interviewing has experience and expertise in handling offshore accident cases, you will know who you need to hire.
