We designed this website to provide information to consumers, injured people, and their families. Our goal is to level the playing field between consumers and insurance companies and expose the tricks, traps, and techniques they use to cheat injured people out of their legal rights. We also let consumers know about legal news, including verdicts and settlements and other interesting legal information.

Last April, the Maersk Alabama, an American-flagged freighter, was attacked by pirates off the coast of Somalia. The captain was taken hostage during that attack and was eventually freed by U.S. Navy SEALS. Ex-crewmen John Cronan and Shane Murphy both said that they were afraid of being attacked again.
Several crewmen have filed suit in Houston against Maersk Line Ltd., the owner of the freighter, and Waterman Steamship Corp. According to Attorney Brian Beckcom, who is representing six of the crewmembers, the lawsuit was filed in Houston because it is the country’s second largest port and judges in Houston have a sophisticated understanding of maritime law.
The lawsuit claims that the companies were negligent when sending the freighter into an area that was notorious for pirates without the proper protection. The crewmembers are pursuing compensation for damages that they suffered during the incident in April.
“Maersk made a conscious decision, despite going into pirate-infested waters, not to provide any meaningful security for its workers. Instead, they’d just rely on taxpayers and U.S. military to bail them out after the fact.”
Murphy had told Maersk that the ship should be renamed, repainted or sent to ply a different route because it would continue to be a target. According to Cronan, Maersk officials commented that making changes would result in too much paperwork.
The freighter was recently attacked again, but this time, private security guards were able to repel the pirates by firing guns and using a high-decibel noise device.
