A Broken Back Can Lead to Cauda Equina Syndrome

If you have broken your back in a maritime accident, such as a fall on a slippery deck, you need to be aware of a condition known as cauda equine syndrome. Cauda equine syndrome can occur
when the spinal cord is compressed from an injury. It is considered to be a serious condition caused by nerve compression in the lower area of the spinal canal.

Cauda equine refers to the bundle of nerves that extends down from the bottom of the spinal cord through the lower vertebrae and over the bone located at the base of the spine. This bundle of nerves can be compressed by a herniated disc, damage from an injury or swelling from inflammation.

Although the pain from this condition is felt in the lower back, it is also possible to experience reduced sensation in the buttocks, thighs, bladder and rectum. Cauda equine syndrome is a serious condition that results in symptoms that range from mild to severe. Some people experience such extreme symptoms that they become disabled and are significantly limited by this condition.

The symptoms of cauda equine syndrome include:

  • Back pain
  • Pain in one or both legs
  • Numbness in the groin area
  • Bowel and bladder problems
  • Muscle weakness
  • Loss of sensation

Cauda equine syndrome requires immediate treatment, because it can lead to permanent loss of bowel and bladder control, as well as paralysis of the legs. Surgery is generally required to treat cauda equine syndrome and it is believed that the procedure should be done within 48 hours to have the best possible recovery.

If you are a maritime worker who has suffered from a broken back or other injury that led to cauda equine syndrome, you may be entitled to compensation for your injuries. You should contact an experienced Houston maritime injury lawyer at Vujasinovic & Beckcom P.L.L.C. at 713.224.7800 or 877.724.7800 for a free legal consultation.
