Barge Accidents and the Jones Act

There are all types of risks that can lead to serious injuries on barges. As a barge worker, you have to contend with dirty bull rails, slippery surfaces and poorly maintained equipment, to name a few of the hazards. These types of dangers can result in life changing injuries.

Barge accidents tend to be catastrophic by nature. When you work on a barge, you are dealing with heavy equipment in an environment that is unpredictable. The sea can be volatile and if safety measures have not been taken or if the crew has not been trained properly, there is a strong probability of a fatal accident. Some of the common injuries associated with barge accidents include:

  • Head trauma
  • Neck injury
  • Back injury
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Broken bones

Often times, an injury from a barge accident is completely preventable. Unfortunately, negligence can lead to a maritime accident.

There is a federal law that provides protection for injured seamen, which is known as the Jones Act. Under the Jones Act, if you are injured while working on a barge, you can pursue compensation for your past and future medical expenses, pain and suffering, mental anguish, disfigurement and other costs associated with your maritime injuries.

If you have been injured in a barge accident, the first thing you should do is seek medical care. After you have received the appropriate medical attention, you need to contact a Houston Jones Act lawyer. A Jones Act attorney will be able to ensure that you are fairly compensated and that you are not taken advantage of by your employer or the insurance company.
