A Reminder of the Dangers of Barge Accidents

Within the maritime industry, barge accidents are unfortunately a regular occurrence. From minor accidents to major explosions, you never truly know what to expect when working on a barge.

Barge Accident Case Against Eldridge Construction

A recent case filed in Jefferson County again brings to light the dangers that barge workers face on a regular basis. The Jones Act lawsuit was filed against R.L. Eldridge Construction regarding an accident that occurred two years ago. According to the suit, Charles Landry of Groves, Texas, was hurt while hooking up a cable to a barge.

While there weren’t a lot of details released about the case, it was reported that he was injured while working on the barge and that the barge accident caused him to suffer severe and permanent injuries. The injured seaman is looking to recover damages for his medical expenses, impairment, lost wages, pain and court costs.

Dangers Faced by Barge Workers

Barges are not the safest environments in which to work. From unpredictable weather to heavy equipment and machinery, barge work can be dangerous. Barge workers have been known to suffer from many of the following types of maritime injuries:

  • Burns
  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Back injuries
  • Amputations
  • Chemical exposure

If you have been hurt in a barge accident, you may be entitled to compensation under a federal maritime law known as the Jones Act. This law allows injured seamen to pursue compensation for their injuries suffered on the job. Compensation in the form of maintenance and cure is paid, no matter who was at fault for the accident. If negligence was involved or the vessel was unseaworthy, a lawsuit may be pursued and additional compensation may be recovered.
