Florida Boat Accidents Responsible for 65 Deaths
When the sun is shining and the temperatures are rising, boating because an even more popular recreational activity. Heading out into the open waters is an ideal weekend adventure for many people, as they power up their boats or sail along the coast. While boating can be a safe and enjoyable activity, it is also responsible for many injuries and deaths each year.
According to the 2009 Boating Accidents Statistical Report released by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), there were 620 Florida boating accidents in one year alone. Some of these boat accidents were deadly and accounted for 65 fatalities.
These numbers reflect “reportable” boat accidents in Florida. A boat accident must be reported if:
Someone is killed
A person disappears and he or she is believed to be either injured or dead
Someone is injured and medical treatment is needed
The value of the vessel damage is $2,000 or higher
Causes of Florida Boat Accident Fatalities
The FWC reports that many of these boating accident deaths were the result of the following:
Falling overboard
Capsizing the boat
Drowning
The FWC also believes that one of the reasons for boating accidents has to do with a lack of safety training. The report published by the FWC states that “the boat operator most likely to be involved in a boating accident is a middle-age or older male who has plenty of boating experience yet has never learned the most important safety considerations by having taken a boating safety course.”
