Carnival Cruise Lines Has a History of Reported Fires

Passengers say crew taped up cracks to block burning smell from wafting into their room

According to Carnival Splendor passengers, on the voyage immediately preceding the one that broke down in the November 8th fire, a smoldering smell was reported numerous times to the crew. Yet, in a story in the website Cruise Bruise.com, when the Coast Guard boarded the ship at the conclusion of the October 31st cruise, those reports were neither documented nor investigated. Instead of the problem being resolved, thousands more new passengers were welcomed aboard.

Within a day, an engine fire broke out, disabling the ship and leaving 3.299 passengers and 1,167 crew members adrift for days in the Pacific Ocean with cold food, overflowing toilets, no air conditioning and showers in the dark.

The article said that Mr. and Mrs. Arthur and Sharron Bacon of Atlanta reported a noticeable smoldering odor in cabin 2395. As the smell persisted throughout the seven day cruise, the crew responded by taping up cracks to keep it from entering their cabin.

What will passengers who praised the crew during the November 7th voyage think when they learn that apparently nothing was done to address the smoldering on the previous cruise?

According to the website, there have been five fires reported on Carnival ships since February, 2009.

On February 6, 2010, two intoxicated crewmembers accidentally started a fire by igniting a rain jacket aboard the Carnival Freedom. Both persons were relieved of their duties and the Master recommended their termination.

On May 16, 2009, 35 fire extinguishers were used to put out a blaze in the battery room of the Carnival Pride on a voyage from Freeport, Bahamas to Baltimore. As indicated in the Cruise Bruise site, the cruise line report stated that: “On May 16, 2009 while underway from Freeport Bahamas to Baltimore Maryland, a fire started onboard the vessel in the battery room. The fire was extinguished and a re-flash watch was set. The Safety Officer reported that the area is clear of smoke and the temperature dropped down to acceptable values.

He also stated that the battery room supported non essential safety equipment onboard the vessel such as internet services. The vessel docked at South Locust Point terminal with no further incident occurring and they refilled all 35 fire extinguishers used during the fire."


Three months prior, there was a fire near Galveston, Texas on the Carnival Ecstasy.

Oftentimes, stories of cruise fires, shipboard illnesses, sexual assaults and other incidents are carefully protected secrets that never make it to media or Coast Guard reports.
