Five Blowouts in the Last 18 Months in the Gulf of Mexico
The Houston Chronicle reported that in the last five years, federal investigators have documented close to 200 safety and environmental violations in Gulf of Mexico rig and platform accidents. Some of these offshore accidents included falls from significant heights, flash fires and falling objects. What was just as alarming is that accident reports reveal that in the Gulf of Mexico alone, there were five reported blowouts in the last 18 months. Blowout Problems Investigators discovered an array of factors that led to these blowouts, such as problems with blowout preventers, safety valves, drilling mud and cement jobs. These issues came to the forefront when the Deepwater Horizon exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, killing 11 workers and injuring countless others. The resulting oil spill has been referred to as the worst environmental disaster in the nation’s history.
Deepwater Horizon Warnings There has been a lot of accusations floating after the rig explosion, but as more details come to the surface, it appears as though there were a lot of concerns regarding safety of the Deepwater Horizon. BP documents show that their engineers commented on issues associated with a casing. However, BP moved forward with the project, despite warnings and safety concerns.
