Carnival Splendor Debacle Begs the Question – “How Safe Are Cruise Ships?”
While it is uncommon to hear of a serious cruise ship injury or a passenger or employee who mysteriously disappears, when something does happen on a cruise ship, many worry about safety. The recent incident involving Carnival’s cruise ship, the Splendor, is no different.
The Splendor's Ill-Fated Journey
The Splendor made national headlines when the cruise ship experienced a fire in the engine room. The cruise ship fire occurred near San Diego and left the large vessel stranded in the ocean. The fire was extinguished successfully, but the aftermath was what was so concerning.
According to USA Today, the 3,006-passenger ship found itself without power. That meant no air conditioning, hot food, telephones or interior lights. Toilets were also affected. Passengers had to wait for what seemed like an eternity, before being towed back to shore.
Carnival said that the U.S. Coast Guard, National Transportation Safety Board, Panama and engineers from the cruise line, were investigating the fire. One company spokesperson said that the aft engine room and switchboard rooms are in need of repair.
The Industry Claims Cruising is Safe
People within the cruise industry will tell you that this form of vacation is safe. However, reports of fires, illnesses and missing passengers have left many travelers feeling uneasy. President Obama signed the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act this last summer, which will require cruise lines to report any deaths, missing persons, sexual harassment, assaults and theft. However, the effects of this new law have yet to be seen.
According to travel experts, your safety is basically in your own hands. That means you need to take certain precautions to stay out of harm’s way. Lock your door when you are in your cabin, wash your hands frequently and practice overall common sense.
Injured on a Cruise?
If you have been hurt on a cruise ship, you need to find out your legal rights. Cruise ship accident cases can be complex, which is why you should consult with an experienced Houston cruise ship lawyer for advice.
