What’s Causing So Many Oil Rig Injuries & Deaths? This Information May Surprise You
The offshore industry will never be the same after the Transocean rig explosion. That unfortunate accident has brought to light the extreme dangers and pressure that oil rig workers face on a daily basis.
It is no secret that offshore rig employees work in treacherous conditions. The ocean and weather is unpredictable and the work is physically straining. There are also the dangers that are associated with the equipment and heavy machinery.
A recent article in The Washington Post, “For oil rig workers, high stress and high risk,” mentions a whole different set of hazards that oil rig workers must contend with.
According to the article, numerous accident reports and investigations by the Minerals Management Service (MMS) have revealed that stress and confusion may be playing a role in the serious injuries and deaths that have been occurring in the Gulf. Rig workers frequently perform their daily, strenuous tasks with very little sleep. Shifts can reach 12 hours and sometimes longer. To make matters worse, workers are often not given sufficient instructions and many lack the necessary training.
Could this explain why so many oil rig workers are injured on the job?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported in 2008 that the overall fatality rate for workers within the oil and gas extraction industry was “approximately seven times the rate for all workers” from 2003 to 2006. A large portion of these fatalities were linked to machinery and pipes and overexertion.
If you have been hurt offshore, whether your injuries occurred due to an oil rig accident or some other event, you need to find out your rights. You could be entitled to compensation.
