Boating is Not as Safe as You Might Believe – 5 Common Causes of Boat Accidents

There is often a false sense of security when you are out on the water. As you ride a jet ski or operate a boat, it might seem like you are free from significant danger. However, boat accident statistics paint a different story. In 2009 alone, the U.S. Coast Guard reported 4,730 boat accidents, which led to 736 deaths. Boating is not as safe as you might believe.

While there are many factors involved in boat accidents, there does appear to be a trend. Below are five of the common causes of recreational boating accidents:

  1. Alcohol: The U.S. Coast Guard cites alcohol use as the number one contributing factor in deadly boat accidents. It has been cited in 16 percent of boating deaths. Many people fail to realize that the effects of alcohol are magnified when boating. The environment when you are out on the water – the sun, wind, motion and spray – only intensify the impact of alcohol. It is estimated that boat operators with a .10 percent BAC are 10 times more likely to get into a deadly accident than boat operators with a zero BAC.
  2. Inexperience: On average, boat operators spend only 110 hours a year on the water. They often do not know how to effectively respond to dangers and unfamiliar situations. There are certain rules that must be followed when out on the water, but many inexperienced boaters are unaware of these regulations, putting themselves and others at risk.
  3. Inattention: Boat operators, just like drivers of cars, must pay close attention to their environment. They need to be on the lookout for hazards and other vessels. Sometimes, boat operators get distracted and these distractions can prove deadly.
  4. Excessive Speed: The faster a boat travels, the harder it is to respond to hazards. Boats and jet skis do not have brakes, meaning the only way to avoid a collision is to quickly maneuver away from the danger. When a boat is speeding excessively, there may be little to no time to react.
  5. Improper Lookout: Just as a boat operator must pay attention, it is also imperative to keep a proper lookout. The U.S. Coast Guard lists improper lookout as one of the top five factors involved in boat accidents.
