You Never Know When a Barge Accident Will Happen
A recent barge accident serves as a reminder to maritime workers of the serious dangers of working on vessels. According to the Nantucket Inquirer and Mirror newspaper, a man was injured after getting pinned between the Steamboat Wharf and a barge. The man, who is an employee of Toscana Corporation, fell overboard as workers were trying to untie the vessel. He ultimately ended up in the icy harbor waters, where he was pulled to safety by co-workers. Luckily, he survived.
Barge Accidents are Not Your Average Hurt-On-The-Job Incidents
A barge accident isn’t your typical work accident. Due to the high level of dangers that are present on barges, the injuries that workers sustain are often life changing, if not deadly. From major brain injuries to broken bones, you never know what can happen when you are on a barge.
If you or a family member has been injured while working on a barge, you need to become familiar with the Jones Act. This federal law provides certain rights to seamen, including paid medical care and living expenses during recovery (known as maintenance and cure). The law also allows you, as a seaman, to pursue your claim in court, where you may be able to obtain significant damages. A Jones Act lawsuit could entitle you to compensation for lost income, medical expenses, pain and suffering and a whole lot more.
Keep in mind that maritime accidents are complex and you need to be sure that you are working with a lawyer who understands the applicable laws.
