Admiralty Extension Act

The Admiralty Extension Act extends Admiralty law to injuries that occurred on land but were caused by a vessel or boat on navigable water.

Before the Admiralty Extension Act was passed by the U.S. Congress, people injured on land by a boat on navigable water could not bring a claim under maritime law.

The Admiralty Extension Act also extends maritime law to those injured while loading or unloading cargo from a ship. Typically, employees whose job is to load and unload cargo from a ship are called "Longshoremen." Longshoremen have worker's comp rights under the Longshore & Harbor Worker's Compensation Act against their employer.

Longshoremen can also bring claims against vessel owners for injuries caused while loading and unloading cargo.
