When does a Florida boat accident need to be reported? Do I need a lawyer if I was injured?

A: According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), there are certain circumstances in which a Florida boat accident must be reported. If someone was injured and medical treatment was required or if someone dies, it is considered a reportable accident. When a person disappears and it is believed that he or she could be injured or dead, an accident report is required as well. Also, if there is vessel damage of $2,000 or more, the proper authorities must be notified.

The FWC states on its website that a Florida boat accident that involves one of the previous factors, must be reported to one of the following, if applicable:

  • Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission
  • County sheriff (in the county where the accident happened)
  • Police chief of the city in which the accident took place

If a serious injury or fatality resulted from the Florida boating accident, you may need the assistance of an experienced lawyer. A boat accident attorney can guide you through the legal process of recovering damages and holding the negligent party liable.
