What questions should I ask before hiring a maritime attorney?

A: Remember, a Jones Act attorney is there to serve your interests and not the other way around. So consider yourself the employer and he or she the prospective employee. Act like you are the company boss conducting a job interview. Appropriate questions to ask include:

How many cases have you won and lost? Are you board certified? What are some of the largest settlements or verdicts you have won? Have you ever worked for the other side and represented defendants? How long on average does it take for your clients to receive a settlement? Can you provide loans as an advance against the award so I can pay my bills? Will I get blackballed for filing a case? Have you represented other clients against the defendant in my case? Will you personally handle my case?

Injured? - We Can Help

If you have been injured in a maritime accident, we recommend that you do your research.  All too often, the company will try to trick you into signing away your legal rights, ask you to give a recorded statement that will hurt your case, force you to see company doctors, or steer you in the wrong direction.  Below is a list of resources we provide to injured maritime employees for FREE.
