What is the difference between Admiralty Law and Maritime Law?

A: Both terms have similar applications and are often interchangeable. Admiralty law originated in England and dealt with contracts on the oceans. Maritime law broadened the scope of admiralty law to cover not just the high seas but navigable waters. One of the biggest differences between the two is that admiralty cases are tried by a judge while maritime cases offer the right to a jury.
