A: Maintenance was originally designed to pay the injured seaman wages equal to what he or she would receive until the end of the voyage and cover the cost of room and board equal to that of the vessel. Cure means that the vessel owner will pay the injured person’s medical expenses until the seaman has received maximum health care. One of the problems is that maintenance and cure amounts are badly outdated, with some injured mariners receiving as little as $15 per day.
