What are the symptoms of oil spill syndrome?

A: According to medical experts, there appears to be many similar symptoms associated with an illness that has been named by the media as “oil spill syndrome.”  Workers involved in the cleanup efforts of the oil spill have reportedly experienced the following:

  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Vertigo
  • Respiratory issues

The George Washington University-Maritime Medical Access program (MMA) has been responding to calls from the spill response crews. These physicians have noticed a trend in the types of symptoms that the workers are suffering from.  It appears as though cleanup workers start to experience these symptoms after being exposed to oil dispersants and fumes for several hours.  They also seem to become ill after handling contaminated oil cleanup materials.
