My employer asked me to see the company doctor after I was hurt offshore. Is that a good idea?

A:

In a word: no.  If you were injured while working offshore, you are under no obligation to see only the company doctor.  In fact, it could work against you if your employer is trying to find ways to minimize your injuries so they don’t have to compensate you as much – if at all.

Injured offshore workers and Jones Act seamen are free to see a doctor of their choosing.  It is best if this doctor is completely independent of their employer, so they can get an unbiased opinion.

Don’t believe your employer or their insurance company if they try to insist that you see their doctor.  You have the right to select your own doctor, one who won’t act as though your injuries are no big deal and who won’t try to force you to return to work before you are ready.
