Im a longshoreman and I was injured on the job. What should I do?

A: Longshoremen are protected under a law known as the Longshore and Harbor Worker’s Compensation Act (LHWCA).  This law allows you to collect compensation while you recover from your injuries.

There are some things you should do following your accident.  Your employer needs to be notified, if you haven’t done so already.  You also need to get the appropriate medical care and provide a written notice of your injury within 30 days to your employer.  As a longshoreman, you have one year after the date of your injury to file a claim for compensation.

You might want to consider contacting a maritime attorney to help you obtain compensation.  An experienced maritime lawyer will assist you with getting the amount of benefits in which you are entitled.
