I hurt my back after slipping on the deck. The doctor said that I have a herniated disc. Should I file a maritime injury claim? What are my rights?

A: Back injuries are unfortunately common in the maritime industry. Maritime employees frequently work on slippery decks, making falls inevitable.  Some workers are injured when they pick up heavy objects or fall from great heights.

As a maritime worker, you could be entitled to compensation. There are laws that protect offshore workers, including General Maritime Law and the Jones Act.  The best thing for you to do is to talk with an experienced maritime attorney.  Keep in mind, it would be wise to consult with a lawyer before signing any papers or agreeing to a recorded statement.
