Do I have to tell the company everything about my medical history? It seems unnecessary to me.

A: When you are injured in a maritime accident, life starts to become difficult and we don’t just mean the pain you are experiencing.  The company and its insurer will look for ways to discredit your maritime injury claim. Don’t give them any ammunition that can be used against you.

It is imperative that you are completely honest about your medical history, meaning you must disclose EVERYTHING.  When you are injured offshore, you better believe that your medical records will come under the microscope.

Companies go to great lengths to dig up dirt on you. We recently heard of a situation where the insurer sent someone to a worker’s hometown in an attempt to find past medical records. Some old injuries were brought up, even the worker’s past drug treatment.

Be upfront and honest about your medical history and it will save you a potential headache in the future.
