You can help fight to protect injured Texas workers

Just because the Texas high court stepped on injured workers’ rights to receive full justice three years ago does not mean the situation cannot be changed for the better.

The consumer agency Texas Watch  is fueling a grass roots campaign to overturn the 2007 Entergy decision. In that case—Entergy Gulf States Inc. v. Summers, the State Supreme Court voted 6-3 to grant corporations such as BP blanket immunity for compensating injured contractors, even if they are hurt by reckless safety practices. The court ruled that a premises owner could in fact also be a contractor. Thus, contracted workers, being covered under workers’ comp. insurance, are prohibited from suing their employers if injured on the premises.

Texas Watch is aggressively coordinating a coalition of labor, consumer and environmental groups in an effort to get lawmakers to act against this injustice. To see what they’re doing, and how you can get involved, click here.
