Deckhands face the reality that an accident can happen at anytime, leaving them with a serious injury to contend with. A maritime injury can lead to many questions, including who will pay my medical bills and living expenses? “Maintenance and cure” deals directly with these important questions.
So, what is “maintenance and cure?” First,
maintenance deals with your living expenses. Your employer may be required to pay your living expenses until your maximum medical cure is reached, meaning your condition cannot improve any further. If you are injured as a deckhand, you can expect to receive an average of $20 to $30 per day.
Cure refers to medical care. Your employer is required by law to pay for the entire amount of your medical treatment until, again, you reach your maximum medical cure. This can include initial medical treatment, hospitalization, physician visits, physical treatment and any medications that your injury might require.
If you or someone you know has been injured while working as a deckhand, you should contact one of our experienced
maritime attorneys at the Law Offices of Vujasinovic & Beckcom P.L.L.C. at (713) 224-7800 or (877) 724-7800.
