To many, a life of working onboard a cruise ship can appear glamorous. What most people don’t realize is the fact that there are inherent risks to working on the open seas. A
cruise ship accident can happen at anytime.
If you are injured while working onboard a cruise ship, you might be left wondering what your rights are and who is responsible for paying your medical expenses.
First, you need to understand a legal term known as “maintenance and cure.” This term refers to the available compensation to those who are injured while working as a seaman.
Cure has to do with your medical expenses. If you are injured while working on a cruise ship, then your employer may be responsible for your medical treatment. It may be available to you until you reach you maximum medical cure, meaning that your condition cannot improve any further.
You might also be entitled to compensation for your living expenses. This is referred to as
maintenance. Your employer could be required to pay you a daily amount, generally $20 to $30.
If you or someone you know has been injured while working on a cruise ship, you should contact one of our experienced
