What you must do if involved in an Alabama boat accident

In the state of Alabama, here is what the law says you must do if you are a boat operator involved in an accident:

1) Immediately stop the boat at the accident scene.

2) Provide assistance to any injured parties unless doing so seriously endangers yourself, your vessel and passengers.

3) Write down your name, address, and boat information to any injured persons as well as to the owner of any damaged property.

4) You must submit a written report within 10 days to the Alabama Marine Police Division if any of the following takes place:

            a) Someone dies or disappears.
            b) Someone is injured and incapacitated for over 72 hours.
            c) Vessel and other property damage exceeds $2,000.

Any law enforcement officer may arrest any person at the scene they believe contributed to the accident.

Anyone who unintentionally and unlawfully causes the death of another person while violating any boating regulation will be guilty of homicide.

The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources offers "Boat Alabama," the official boat safety course which allows you to test on line.
