Website looks at some of the deadliest rig accidents in history

The Deepwater Horizon explosion which killed 11 workers in April does not rank among the 10 deadliest offshore events in history. The offshore oil and gas industry has a track record of significantly greater losses of life. The deadliest event was the 1988 Occidental Piper Alpha explosion which killed 167 workers. Eight years earlier, 123 workers died aboard the accommodation rig Alexander L. Kielland when it capsized after one of the support legs collapsed. The third deadliest event was the capsizing of a Seacrest drillship during a typhoon in 1989. A summary of other offshore disasters can be found here.
