The Insurance Company May Try to Lower the Value of Your Maritime Injury Claim

The insurance company is in the business of making money, which is why it will look for ways to hold onto as much cash as possible.  What does that mean for injured maritime workers?  It means that the insurer will employ tactics to attempt to reduce the value or even deny maritime accident claims.

If you have been injured offshore, don’t expect the insurance company to offer you what your claim is worth.  Also, don’t be surprised if the company doesn’t look out for your best interests – after all, the company doesn’t want to be liable for your injuries.

Insurance companies and employers often use tactics to try to trick maritime workers.  For example, if you are injured in an offshore accident, you may be asked to give a recorded statement and may be told that it just a part of the investigation.  The truth is, the insurance company is hoping you will say something that will give a reason to either deny or undervalue your maritime injury claim.

Your employer may tell you that you need to see the company doctor.  Understand that you get to choose your own physician.  If the company is looking for ways to minimize your claim, going to the company doctor could actually hurt your chances of recovering a reasonable settlement.
