Incidents on Hercules Offshore rigs reflects the dangers of the drilling industry

Working on drilling rigs poses a lot of safety risks which makes that one of the most dangerous occupations in the world. From the BP oil spill hearings it was made clear by CEOs that cost considerations and worker safety is a balancing act.

Some of the dangers present on drilling rigs include:

-“Kelly” brake failure
-Cathead slips
-Faulty blocks or cables
-Wet and obstructed walkways
-Risk of blowout or explosion

Potential injuries include:

-Severe burns
-Broken bones
-Head trauma
-Back and neck injuries
-Wrongful death

One such marine services company, Hercules Offshore, has had at least 75 personal injury claims filed against it and its entities since 2008. 23 were filed in 2008, 40 in 2009 and 12 so far in 2010.
