Tankerman sues after suffering injury on icy deck

A seaman is suing his former employer after suffering shoulder and back injuries in icy conditions.

The plaintiff, a 40-year-old man from Great Lakes, Illinois, was working as a tankerman on the M/V Mary Burke Liles. The employer was Louisiana-based Blessey Marine Service, Inc. On or around Dec. 3, 2010, he and other crewmembers were ordered to transfer equipment between barges on an icy deck. A co-worker allegedly slipped on the ice, resulting in a spill kit falling into the plaintiff and causing two herniated discs.

The spill kit weighed between 125-200 pounds.

The plaintiff’s name was not released.
