Tankerman files suit after icy conditions cause injury

A tankerman is suing Blessey Marine Service Inc. and Blessey Marine Inc. for injuries suffered while working in icy conditions.

Rodriguez D. Bailey filed the case April 11 in New Orleans federal court.

Bailey claims that he was unloading barges with deckhands in snow and ice in an area without a non-skid surface.  While transferring a spill kit, one of the co-workers slipped and forced the spill kit to tumble and injure Bailey. The injuries are undisclosed.

Bailey seeks damages for physical pain and suffering, mental anguish, medical expenses, loss of earnings, maintenance and cure, court costs and attorney's fees.

He charges that he should not have been forced to work in icy conditions without a non-skid surface. Moreover, he accuses the defendant of having an inexperienced and insufficient crew, failure to use a mechanical lifting device and failure to properly maintain control of cargo.
