Stroke victim medevaced from Carnival cruise ship off Alaska

A 47-year-old woman suffering stroke-like symptoms was medevaced by Coast Guard helicopter from the Carnival Spirit cruise ship 50 miles south of Juneau, Alaska on June 2.

Air Station Sitka dispatched an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter after the ship’s captain called at 9:05 a.m. to request a medical evacuation of Michelle Walker of unknown residence.

The helicopter crew, which included a flight surgeon and corpsman, departed Sitka at 9:33 a.m. and arrived at the ship which was located at Stephens Passage at 10:55 a.m. A rescue swimmer was deployed to assist with the transfer if needed.

Walker was hoisted safely onto the helicopter and flown to Juneau where she was transferred to Bartlett Regional Hospital for additional treatment.
