Ship damaged when sling snaps from overloaded crane

A cargo handling company has been suspended from operations pending the investigation of a crane accident that caused serious damage to a ship.

A load of logs dropped onto the deck of the vessel Kyaukpyu when the crane sling around them snapped during offloading operations. The accident occurred at the dock in Kolkata, India on November 14. Because the event happed in the early morning hours only a few people were on board and no one was injured.

Though the crane capacity was 14 tons, many of the logs weighed 30 tons.

The freight handler, B. Ghosh & Company, remains under suspension.
