Severe hand injury reminds us of the dangers of fish processers

A crewman recently was airlifted after suffering a severe hand injury aboard a fish processing vessel in the Pacific Northwest. 46-year-old Mamadou Konato was taken by Coast Guard helicopter from the 276-foot Pacific Glacier which was situated 40 miles southwest of Coos Bay, Oregon. Though further details were unavailable, it is common knowledge that hand injuries happen seemingly all the time on this type of boats. Contributing factors to this hazardous environment include fatigue, lack of training and insufficient safety guards, just to name a few.
