Rig worker claims he was fired for reporting racial discrimination

Oil rig worker K. Dewayne Green claims a pink slip was all he got for reporting racist comments against him.

As a result, he filed a racial discrimination lawsuit against former employer Patterson-UTI Drilling Co. on May 26.

Green, an African American, had only worked for two months as a floor hand on one of the defendant's rigs when he was fired in April 2010 for what he said was retaliation for reporting insults and derogatory comments from co-workers that he endured from the time he started his employment.

He alleges he reported the abusive language to his supervisor and the human resources department but was written-up and disciplined while white workers conducting the same behavior were not punished.

The defendant is charged with harassment, hostile work environment, unlawful retaliation due to racial discrimination, discriminatory treatment and unlawful employment practices and retaliation.

Green asks for loss of wages, mental anguish, emotional pain, suffering, inconvenience, court costs, interest and attorney's fees.

The case was filed in the Eastern District of Texas.
