Many neck muscular injuries, while painful, do not require extensive medical attention and can be treated with ice and heat along with analgesics that can be bought over the counter. Oftentimes the injury will actually get better with little or no treatment. Neck bone injuries, however, are a different story and will generally require bracing or surgery to remedy the problem. A serious neck spinal injury such as a fractured cervical vertebrae is known as a broken neck and symptoms may include neck pain, breathing problems, paralysis and death. A common method to repair the fracture is by fusing the vertebrae onto the next one like a splint. If the vertebrae is broken beyond repair it will probably be removed and replaced with a bone graft. Treatments include immobilization, physiotherapy and splinting. Be aware that recovering from a broken neck may take quite some time.
