Pleasure craft are required to keep a lookout

Every vessel must have a proper lookout, from oceangoing tanker to one-person Boston Whaler.

According to Coast Guard Navigation Rules, Rule 5, "Every vessel shall at all times maintain a proper lookout by sight and hearing as well as by all available means appropriated in the prevailing circumstances and conditions so as to make a full appraisal of the situation and of the risk of collision." This means that the operator must have awareness of the surroundings to avoid a collision.

A Missouri woman was recently charged with criminal negligence for failure to keep a proper lookout after colliding with another boat that resulted in the deaths of two persons. The woman was operating a 2005 Blazer utility boat, which is a pleasure craft.
