While a shipping company waits out the ransom demands of Somali pirates, its crewmembers are literally dying of starvation.
A mariner has died of severe malnutrition after being held captive by pirates for seven months. The seaman was believed to be a Yemen national and was one of 23 hijacked crewmembers aboard the UAE-flagged
M/V Iceberg I. The Azal Shipping owned vessel carried fuel and generators and was taken over by 50 Somali pirates in March. Repainted to the name of
Sea Express, it was sailed to Kulub, Somalia.
The cause of death is reportedly believed to be a combination of malnutrition and severe emotional distress and the crewman attempted to kill himself in the days before his death. The other crewmembers hail from Yemen, India, Sudan, Canada, Philippines and Pakistan are also thought to be malnourished after running short of food and water.
The company is said to be in negotiations with the pirates but is unwilling to pay ransom demands.
