Pirate attacks becoming more violent

According to the latest piracy and armed robbery report on Somali piracy by the UN Secretary-General, the intensity of violence is increasing in the attacks. Though Sec. Gen. Ban Ki-Moon said that naval patrols have reduced the number of attacks off of the Somali coast, some of the events have turned violent.

His recommendation: crews need to follow best management practices (BMPs).

The EU NAVFOR task force issued a report this week blaming many successful attacks directly on seafarers for failing to adequately follow BMPs.
