A recent survey indicates that 79 percent of sailors on dinghies and keel boats had at least one injury during the past 12 months.
1,860 sailors responded to the on-line survey by Rhode Island Hospital researchers. They reported a total of 1,715 injuries. 33 percent sought medical care after their injuries and 25 percent received first aid at the scene. 4 percent required evacuation of hospitalization.
Fractures totaled 25 percent of the most serious injuries, torn cartilage or tendons 16 percent, concussions 14 percent and dislocations 8 percent.
