We recently posted an article,
Fires & Explosions in the Gulf of Mexico are Nothing New to the Maritime Industry, where we discussed the numerous incidents that have occurred in the past few years. Even though the
Deepwater Horizon explosion and the
Mariner Energy platform fire have caught national attention, accidents frequently happen in the Gulf of Mexico.
Over the last four years, there were hundreds of fires and explosions in the Gulf of Mexico, according to the
Wall Street Journal. On average, over 100 incidents occur each year. For example, in 2009, there were 133 fires and explosions reported. While not all of these incidents were fatal, many resulted in serious injuries.
If you are a rig or platform worker, you know firsthand the hazards of working on such a vessel. You are exposed to dangerous conditions and work in an unpredictable environment. Injuries sustained in rig and platform fires are often serious, even permanent.
