As of this weekend it remains to be seen if Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick will sign into law the first wage increase for Boston pilots in over 10 years.
S2174, the Pilot Rate Board Bill, cleared both houses of the State legislature on Monday. It then went to Patrick’s desk where it has 10 days to be signed into law or it will die.
The bill would establish a so-called Pilotage Rate board and provide a 11.25% wage increase for Boston Harbor Pilots, who work in some of the toughest weather and operating conditions in the country but remain underpaid by industry standards. Moreover, while shipping traffic has dropped by up to 20 percent in many ports, the volume in Boston has remained steady.
