Maritime Lawyer Weighs in on the AL Offshore Injury Waiting Game

In a recent article, we discussed the difference between the emotionally charged "inflection points" of your maritime personal injury case - the reading of your verdict, a court's decision on a key point of law, etc. - and the far longer "calm periods" between these inflection points. The challenge for personal injury victims is not so much to "do well" during the inflection points. That's really the job of your attorney. Rather, you must focus on managing yourself during the longer stretches when nothing much seems to be happening.

As we discussed, many clients spend an inordinate and destructive amount of their time thinking about the case, perseverating about this-or-that possibility, and procrastinating when it comes to the important task of putting their lives back together and planning for the future.

One tactic you can employ to identify bad thinking habits and correct them is to start keeping a daily journal of your thoughts. Every night (or morning), devote five to ten minutes to jotting down your thoughts - be they about your Alabama offshore injury case or anything else. Don't worry at first about how a journal might help you - just simply make journaling a regular daily habit. After a few weeks, you will notice patterns in how you think, how you approach problems, and how you are stressing (or not) about your case.

By analyzing your journal, you will get a better sense of the chronic problems that you and your family face. You then can use this information to make far more informed decisions about what to concentrate on - e.g. financial planning, healing from your injury, communicating with your attorneys, etc.
