Maritime industry putting own liability concerns above crew piracy defense

Maritime Accident Attorney.com has been told from an inside source that one of the real reasons many companies oppose putting armed guards on commercial vessels transiting high risk areas is their potential liability in the event a guard loses control and opens fire on the crewmembers.

The source, who attended an  International Transportation Workers' seafarers' conference held in Buenos Aires in June, confirmed to us that representatives from several companies and organizations relayed those sentiments to him.

"Many of these companies are terrified from embarking armed teams because of the risk-no matter how remote-of one of them going berserk and shooting the crew," the source said.

Meanwhile, over 800 seafarers are presently being held hostage at the hands of Somali pirates.
