Mariner files suit after cable snap breaks leg

A barge worker recently filed suit against his employer after a cable snapped and broke his leg. Rene Ruano of St. Tammany Parish, La., seeks $50,000 from Gill's Crane & Dozer Service, Inc. Ruano's suit alleges that in June, 2010, while "assisting in straightening a concrete pile that needed to be capped, when the cable that was being used snapped, crushed petitioner's leg causing both his tibia and fibia to be broken."

The accident allegedly occurred on Lake Pontchartrain.

Ruano asks compensation for pain, suffering and disability as well as loss of enjoyment of life. The defendants are accused of failure to provide a safe workplace, breaching general maritime law and using the wrong cable for the job.

The suit was filed in Orleans Parish Civil District Court on May 24.
