Jones Act lawsuits filed in mystery Gulf sinking

That the vessel Silver Wings sank in the Gulf of Mexico 100 miles off of Grand Isle, Louisiana, is a fact. What’s not known, or at least is not being reported, is the reason why it went down.

The families of two of the victims are suing for justice. In fact, one of the family members is even suing another victim.

Sandra Williams filed a claim this month against employer John Landry, Sr. for the death of her husband Jerry Martinez Williams, the vessel’s captain. Williams claims the vessel was unseaworthy and Landry provided an unsafe workplace. She asks for survivor’s benefits.

The other suit was filed by the son of William Morales, another seaman who drowned on the Silver Wings. Walter Morales is suing not only Landry but also names Williams as responsible for the death of his father.

Neither lawsuit states the cause of the sinking.
