This question is one that researchers are hoping to answer in a new study that will examine the health effects of the massive oil spill. The oil spill occurred in the aftermath of the
Deepwater Horizon explosion, which killed several rig workers and injured many others. While fingers are still being pointed and companies are denying their liability, we will hopefully soon discover the full extent of this disaster.
The study may include up to 27,000 individuals involved in the cleanup efforts of the
Gulf of Mexico oil spill. The National Institutes of Health will be the one performing the research.
“It would be great to get some sort of sense about the larger community and larger population. To tell the public, ‘this is where you fit in terms of what we’ve found in terms of health effects,’” Robert Wallace, a committee member and a professor of epidemiology of the University of Iowa, said.
Apparently, BP is contributing quite a bit of money to the research, $10 million to be exact.
