News agencies are reporting that 326 people became ill on a Celebrity Cruise ship yesterday. The cruise ship departed from South Carolina. A Celebrity Cruise spokesperson said 326 of the 1,800 passengers became ill and experienced upset stomachs, nausea and diarrhea. Also, Celebrity Cruise reported that 27 of the 850 crew members experienced a similar illness.
The full extent of each person's illness and injury is not yet known.
Celebrity Cruise should conduct an investigation of how and why this happened, and outside agencies may also investigate. Strict maritime laws apply to the operation of cruise ships, and Celebrity Cruise could very well be liable for each ill person's damages.
The maritime laws that apply to the crew members are somewhat different, as they are based on the Jones Act. The Jones Act law is favorable to maritime workers, which should benefit the Celebrity Cruise crew members who got sick.
An experienced Maritime Lawyer should be able to determine if there is liability and, if so, how much compensation must be paid by Celebrity Cruise. It would be wise for any ill passengers and crew members to consult with an experienced Maritime Attorney before accepting any settlement offer from the cruise line.
