Hercules Offshore uses near human tragedy for business PR

There is a press release on the Hercules Offshore company website about a fire that forced the evacuation of 27 workers from its liftboat Mako on Jan. 16.

Only two sentences in the release are devoted to the evacuation and condition of the workers who were fortunately safely transported off the vessel with no major injuries reported. But imagine the shock and horror they experienced being roused in the middle of the night while their vessel was engulfed in flames 150 miles off the coast of Nigeria. For many of these workers who may suffer from the effects of PTSD for years to come, the nightmare only began when they fled the burning ship.

After those two sentences about the evacuation, most of the remainder of the article is strictly business. At least two-thirds of the release focuses on the vessel’s insured value and on Hercules’ company profile.

At least the writer had the decency not to focus on how the fire affected Hercules’ share price.

Hercules is frequently in the news as a defendant in worker injury cases. Read here.
