Helicopter crashes into Gulf; two hospitalized with severe back injuries

The cause of a helicopter crash in the Gulf of Mexico remains under investigation.

The Coast Guard received a call at 10:50 a.m. on November 1 from Rotorcraft, a helicopter leasing company.

They were notified that one of Rotorcraft's helicopters crashed during takeoff from rig number 442A, about 75 miles south of Galveston.

The aircraft went into the water carrying its pilot and a passenger. The helicopter deployed its floats.

A nearby supply boat rescued the two men, who were transported by Coast Guard helicopter to the University of Texas Medical Branch for treatment of critical back injuries.
